Do you recall the days before smartphones were in everyone's pockets? When business types and tech aficionados used "Pocket PCs", "Palmtops" and "PDAs"? If you do, then you may have fond memories of the Psion Series devices. You may even have bought such a product from Clove Technology several moons ago!
Now enter Planet Computers.
Looking to introduce a functional version of the PDA into a modern tech landscape, the Gemini PDA follows the same clamshell & 4-row keyboard design.
Gemini isn't just looking at the past though; this is a thoroughly modern device. As of June 2018, stocks of the palmtop have begun shipping with a modified version of Android 7 (8.0 Oreo update confirmed) and several Planet Computers applications designed specifically for the environment.
Key specifications include a 6" 18:9 capacitive touchscreen, 2.6 GHz deca-core MediaTek processor and 4G LTE.
As of May 2018, Planet Computers have advertised and raised money through their Indiegogo crowdfunding page. They have now amassed well over $2,000,000 since December 2017, several times over their original $200,000 target!
Initial manufacturing runs of the phone have been completed and many early backers now have the Gemini in their hands.
Orders for the Gemini PDA are now open!
The senior team at Clove has had direct contact with Planet Computers since the device's conception and have stayed abreast of the product's development and manufacturing since then.
Through June 2018, Clove has received stock of both the Cellular and Wi-Fi only models of the Gemini, fulfilling orders to customers in the UK and in many international destinations.
We are aware that Planet has offered several international keyboard layouts to crowdfunding backers. We initially intended to offer some of these, however, due to stock levels and availability from Planet's UK distribution hub, we are now only offering a UK QWERTY configuration (withUK Power Plug).
Originally Planet planned for the Gemini PDA to ship with a dual-boot environment for a Linux distribution. During manufacture, it was decided to ship the devices only with the Android system installed.
It is still possible for the end user to partition Gemini's storage and install a Linux distribution of their choice. Early examples of both Debian 9 & SailfishOS has shown them running well. Installing a Linux distribution is supported by Planet Computers and will not affect your warranty.
As a retailer, the staff at Clove have some working knowledge of the Gemini PDA, although are not best positioned to answer detailed technical questions.
