If you did than you should not be surprised about the tariff charge.

SURPRISE! Just getting the FairPhone 5 to the USA in Sep 2025 costs an extra $143 in tariffs, payable on the spot when the phone arrives at your door, or else UPS will ship it all the way back to London. They say they'll try you 1 or 2 more times on subsequent days, but I wouldn't bet on that. I haven't even opened it yet. I sure hope it's good enough to make up for that nasty surprise. Clove didn't mention that in advance at all. There's no practical way to contact Clove since they evidently don't answer emails within a few business days, and my cell plan doesn't include international phone calls. And there seems to be no practical way to recover the tariff after paying, in case it's been improperly classified. That seems to require customs lawyers, and a process far too expensive to be practical.

The phone is more or less what I wanted. The flimsy back needs a more substantial one.
It never closes properly.
I was very disappointed that I could not buy another battery.
Ideally, I would have two additional batteries with a remote charger.

However I've been unable to find a store that accepts to ship a spare battery internationally, which kinda defeats the main purpose I had of wanting this phone. A little dumb considering you can buy the same battery when it's already inside a phone I would have liked a warning about this. Other spare parts seems to be ok.

Works well in the us on mint mobile. No issues on stock android.

For Canadians: It took less than 1 week to receive my phone from Clove, but you will probably have to submit some ID as part of their anti-fraud policy.
Warning: I had requested DHL drop my phone off at one of their pickup points but they delivered it to my door when i was not home regardless. Everything was fine, but just a reminder DHL is not the most competent courier and you should not expect them to do basic things like... read or cooperate. I would not recommend approving their signatureless drop off.

For reception, its better than my last phone (motorola power g-7) and I have had zero issues with my Carrier (freedom mobile). Just swap the sim and you're set.

As for the phone itself, I like it. All of the obvious pros like you can take out the battery, SIM, expansion card, its repairable etc is all fantastic. The only missing feature is there is no headphone jack.... bluetooth all the way, just be aware. My only mild complaint is the battery life is not stunning but it will be ok for the vast majority of people. Also if the battery life starts to diminish too much in a few years I can always replace it with anything that fits this form factor, which is how phones should be so I am unconcerned. Most people will not have an issue unless you use your phone intensely all day and object to plugging it in ever.

The camera is good and takes nice photos, both front and rear. The internet is quite fast on it compared to my last phone, and overall I am happy with the performance.

OS. I disabled most of the google stuff and installed FDroid and its working well with lots of FOSS apps with no problems. It appears to be fairly straightforward if you want to install /e/OS or another OS like lineageOS or even Ubuntu Touch. For now I will leave the stock OS as it is working well and FP offers years of security updates in this state.

It was expensive, yes, but thats what you get when workers get paid better, environmental damage is considered, and the phone outright rejects planned obsolescence. This is how phones should be and its nice knowing that I have minimized unethical behaviour with a device that I am likely to keep using for close to a decade. It is a sad sate of affairs that even fairphone cannot eliminate the atrocities of critical minerals and unethical labour practices, but its a great direction to be going in.

I did buy a Tudia phone cover from Amazon because the fairphone version does not appear to do a good enough job protecting the phone, however I did not actually have one for a direct comparison. The tudia cover is quite good, which is nice considering there are so many less options for the FP5.

Brilliant phone, great to have an SD card slot again and the hardware and software warranties/updates are amazing.

Well built throughout, little heavier than I expected but has a larger battery.Screen is sharp and clear, Overall much better than my Sony Experia 5 and cheaper.

I've been happy with my Fairphone 5. It was shipped to Canada quickly and is working well here. It's great to have a phone designed for longevity and repair.

I've only been using my new phone for about a week, so this isn't a super-comprehensive review. But, I've generally been very happy so far. The phone is quick and didn't come with a bunch of bloat-ware. I'm using it in Canada (specifically Saskatchewan, using the Sasktel network, with Lum as my carrier) and have had no problems with service.

The automatic transfer over of my old applications to the new phone went fairly well, but I'll caution that notifications got turned off for all the apps by default, so that wasn't ideal.
The physical phone is larger than I'd prefer, it's a little hard to use it with a single hand. (Unfortunately that seems to be the trend with most phones though.)
The battery life has been great. I'm not a heavy phone user, but I easily got 2 days use on a single charge, might have been able to go for 3.
I miss having a physical home button on the face of the phone, as sometimes it takes a moment to find the power button on the side, but the virtual home button has consistently worked well.
The phone is definitely designed/intended to be used with one of the optional cases -- the cameras stick out a few mm on the back and I think it looks weird without the protective case on.

I was happy that Clove was able to ship to Canada , and I had no issues with the shipping. There was 129 CAD in taxes and duty, but that was in-line with my expectations. There wasn't any 'brokerage fees' that some couriers seem to charge.

Nice design, performant, eco and fixable! This kind of phone need to be available everywhere!!

I bought a Fairphone 5 from Clove and have now had it for a few weeks. Buying a costly new phone online feels risky but Clove delivered exactly what I ordered with no hassle and on time. They were recommended by Fairphone too! The phone itself is great - easy to upgrade to Android 14, set up and use. I read a lot about phone sustainability and really wanted a Fairphone but they don't ship outside of Europe. Clove is a perfect option to solve this and the Fairphone 5 works smoothly on New Zealand's 4 and 5G networks.

Works out of the box. Great phone. Easy to setup and take apart.
Only gripe is they put Fairphone OS (google-d OS) instead of the de-googled e/OS it's supposed to come with >_>

The phone was delivered in 3 days! Clove provided updates at each stage of the process (ordered, shipped, out for delivery, delivered). The phone is in great condition and exactly what I wanted (:

REVIEWING FROM AUSTRALIA: upgraded from an FP3+ to this FP5 (due to a swelling battery), now i get service in places i always had trouble, which is great! exactly what i needed due to 3G networks being shut down. phone works well, only occasional glitchy stuff which i think is mostly due to me postponing upgrades. basically flawless wireless copying across from my previous phone. main downside is google notifications about backups, upgrading storage, etc annoying me - just need to get around to telling those to leave me alone permanently somehow. i love the translucent back, but i had to buy a transparent case on ebay to show it off, which is a little annoying. otherwise, really great investment, and i hope it continues to perform well into the future.

Shipped UPS to America took about four days to show up, had tracking and didn't take money from my account till the order was completed

Phone functional and no problems. Bought the phone for social and environmental reasons and it has not disappoined.

Fairphone was the easiest to root phone I've ever had. So many features of the phone are power user friendly.
Android 13 is a fickle OS but put an alternative rom on here and theres nothing to worry about

I bought this phone for the environnement and ethical aspect and I was really suprised that it had good performance as well! Highly recommend!
